Saturday 13 April. Approx start time: 1200
Brought to you by the fabulous Magrette Timepieces, this race will be the selection event for who gets to represent NZ at the long distance race at the ISA World Championships. The distance has been set at 16km to mirror the ISA requirements.
The race is not specifically designed to include a significant downwind component. As it is an ‘out and back’ race there are likely to be upwind, downwind and crosswind elements, depending on the prevailing conditions. Some of the course will be in relatively sheltered waters, within the Waitangi Inlet, while some will be in the more open and potentially rough waters of the Bay, as shown below.
The race will start and finish in front of the main competition area, within Waitangi Holiday Park. There will be a straight 500m drag race to a turning mark, after which the fleet will head out under Waitangi Bridge, into the bay. The fleet will then paddle around the two islands directly offshore, the direction of rounding depending on the prevailing wind. After rounding the islands the fleet will proceed back into the inlet, up to Haruru Falls, a total distance of 8km. The fleet will then paddle back down the inlet, out around the islands again, back into the inlet, and to shore. The race route passes close to the start/finish site on several occasions, allowing easy breakout options for any participant wishing to retire from the race.
The section of the course outside of the inlet will be set subject to the prevailing weather conditions, and may not necessarily involve rounding the islands, if there is a more interesting or weather-friendly option available.
